Day 6 & 7, Monday June 23, 2008, Tuesday, June 24, 2008

We left at about 8:30. Prepared for our arrival at Cottonwood Cove! We feel the altitude, Kate more so than Dave. Kate has had a headache since yesterday and she gets “winded easily”…thankfully she’s not an athlete running a marathon! Bonnie is doing well and is just happy to be with us.

We arrived at about 1:00 and got set up in a jiffy! Some of our fellow workampers came to offer us any assistance we might need. We chose a site second from the river, with a nice view in all directions! The horses and stable are behind us! We suppose the best way to summarize this place up is NATURE, NATURE and NATURE!!! We were told just across the river, the Rio Grand, which is only about the width of 3 or 4 car lanes, earlier there was a bear on the other side. Apparently every evening, 2 coyotes make their daily trek on the other side as well. Across the road, Rt. 149 is the lodge, more cabins and the RV campground. Directly behind the lodge is a mountain cliff going up 1,000 feet. They tell us that mountain sheep and goats are on there and occasionally come down as well!

After we were set up, we went to the lodge restaurant for a late lunch and reported for work. Since we are not used to the altitude, they gave us an extra day to work on the acclimating. About 2:30, we were so excited to be here that we hopped in the Jeep and went to the small mining town of Creede. It is everything you think of when you think of an “old west town”! The main street is not very long and every building has the old western façade. Since Colorado is very “dog friendly”, we took Bonnie with us. The shop owners welcomed her in their stores and one came out to give her a dog treat! The small little park there has a water fountain, one for adults, one for kids and one for dogs! Bonnie is sporting her new neckerchief that Jane made her and she even had 2 comments on it!

After our stroll through the town, we continued on that road which becomes the “Batchelor tour” an off road tour of some old silver mines and their buildings. After about an hour of that, we decided that since it was starting to sprinkle we headed back. Back at our new home, Bonnie got to meet the horses and Kate watched one of the “wranglers” shoe one of them. Then we went to the river and watched one of the fly fishermen catch some speckled trout!

Tuesday, today, we went back to Alamosa for some stuff and to start to get the lay of the land! While we were away one of the bears came through the cabin area, fortunately one of the wranglers shooed it away! It is cool here and we even had to use the heat this morning. Stay tuned for more pictures and stories. For those of you who might call us, we do not have cell service here because we are smack in the middle of some mountains, but we take our cell phones with us on our trips, so we will get your voice mails and call you back then.
